At thirty years of age, I wrote my first
song entitled "Your Light Has Come Through." When I believed the song to be finished, I set aside my pen and guitar.
I contemplated the future with great expectations. Though I knew little to nothing about writing songs of praise and adoration
to the Lord, I believed my first contribution to Him would undoubtedly earn some form of songwriting recognition and perhaps
to earn a special place in God’s heart. In a manner of speaking, I was on my way. Rather naïve thinking, right?
I was a younger Christian full of spirit and a youthful desire to prove myself in what some might call a grandiose manner.
I had been lost a long time and I believed to be successful at something would prove to my friends and family that I had worth.
Well, we all want to be special, right? Now, thirty-four years later, I look back on that first song and I find many flaws
in the writing of it and in my motives as well. Above all this, my walk with Christ was in its infant stage and I had much
to learn. Little did I know that victory over trials and worldly tribulations would come only through holding tight to the
Word of God and in giving complete control of all that you do to the Savior Jesus Christ.

I failed Him miserably more than once. To say the least, my first contribution in song was not a success by the world’s
standards, nor did it bring self worth. Just as noteworthy, my Christian songs of today are not successful when judged by
the standards of this world. However, I have come to know a true joy in songwriting, sharing and singing to the Lord. I believe
ones life’s experiences combined with a solid trust in God will provide substance and foundation for a song written
to God. I also believe a new song is a gift from God to help the writer in his or her personal walk. I immediately give a
new song back to Him (in all humility) with a prayer that He might use it for His purpose. Christ has brought me through cancer,
through the loss of loved ones due to alcohol and drugs, through a near fatal head injury and through a war in South Viet
Nam so very long ago. With this, I ask you to use your own life experiences for His service. Your value to Him has no boundary
and there is no limit to His Love for you.
Your friend, David Lee Murray
